Ballina Street Festival and Arts Week, Mayo, Ireland

Ballina Street Festival and Arts Week

James Geraghty , Festival Office, Cathedral Road, Co. Mayo

National Heritage Day: Ballina turns back the clock on the Wednesday to the world of by-gone days where the streets of the town are closed to traffic and are filled with stalls, where old and once disappearing crafts are displayed and practiced for all to see. The celebration of our heritage is a day when all are invited to get into the spirit of the past by dressing in period costume of the last century. Up to thirty thousand visitors come to watch this colourful and exciting event each year. Teddy Bear's Picnic: The Teddy Bear's Picnic is truly the highlight of the children's programme which is just as comprehensive as the main programme of events. This is a fun-filled afternoon which is held in the town park and attracted over five thousand children last year. Jugglers and clowns, fire eaters, puppeteers, pony rides, face painting, mime artists and magicians, with free refreshments for all this is really the place to be. Mardi-Gras: The streets come alive to the sound of the Samba Beat on the Saturday. Costume, colour and music vibrate as the parade snakes it's way through the centre of the town. With over fifty different floats it takes two hours for it to reach it's climax at the river where it ends to a kaleidoscope of colour and excitement with a magnificent ire works display. Wild West Evening: Another spectacular theme during festival week where families are entertained with rodeo exhibitions and numerous side shows with an on site barbecue Truly a family outing. River Frolics: There's plenty of fun to be enjoyed on the river in this year's festival. Curragh, Racing, Jetski Racing and the Greasy Pole are all very exciting, not to forget the Crazy Raft Race or the Moy Swim. Displays by the Sub Aqua Club and the Marine Rescue are a perfect menu for a great afternoon's enteratinment. Race Day: Fancy a day at the track. There's nothing to beat a day at the races. The sport Kings comes to town for the last day of the festival. There's seven races on the card for the day and prizes for the best dressed lady and the most original hat. Relax to the sound of a jazz band as you study the farm and treat yourself to some smoked salmon or a glass of champagne. Music and Street Entertainment: The festival tries to cater for all tastes in music with Rock, Pop, Country and Western, and a large portion of traditional music on the streets for the week. Also there's plenty of entertainment, such as Street Theatre, Fire Eaters, Busking and Puppet Shows sprinkled throughout the town for the week's programme. Ballina Street Festival: The primary aim of the committee is to provide to the public a week of fun and entertainment for all the family, young and old alike. Most of the events are free and a nominal cover charge applies in some cases. We invite you to come and experience what will truly be a week you'll never forget.

The Granuaile Centre

Co. Mayo

The Granuaile Centre provides an audio-visual presentation on the life and times of Grace O'Malley (c. 1530-1600), whose daring exploits and career are part of the folklore of the region. It explores how she achieved control of the area around Clew Bay, her relationship with other Gaelic and anglo-Irsh leaders, her meeting with Queen Elizabeth I, her social life and her commercial, diplomatic and political achievements in what was then a male-dominated society. The Centre also has an exhibition dealing with the Great Famine, during which Mayo lost over 100,000 of its population through death and emigration.
